Honed Black Fantasy Granite Bathroom Countertops in Big Sky, MT

Project Backstory

At Granite Mountain Countertops, we like a project where a dark, characterful stone gets to be the quiet anchor of the room. For this bathroom in Big Sky, Montana, we fabricated and installed Black Fantasy granite in a honed finish, giving the space a deep, grounded look that holds its own against the bright mountain light.

Black Fantasy carries movement you notice up close. A near-black base is broken by soft ribbons of grey and warm brown, and the honed finish keeps that pattern from turning glossy. The surface reads matte and velvety rather than reflective, which suits a bathroom well, since a low-sheen top hides water spots and daily wear better than a polished one.

The details are where this one came together. We mitered the edges so the countertops carry a thicker, more substantial profile than the slab alone would suggest. Paired with undermount sinks, the result is a clean, continuous surface with no lip to catch grime, easy to wipe down and built to live with for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Granite is dense and durable, but like most natural stone it should be sealed. A honed surface can show water marks or soap film a little more than a polished one, so a quick wipe after use and resealing about once a year keeps it looking right. For everyday cleaning, warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner are all you need. Skip acidic or abrasive products, which can dull the stone over time.

Honing removes the high-gloss polish and leaves a smooth matte surface. On a dark stone like Black Fantasy, that softens the black to a deep charcoal and plays down reflections, giving a more understated, modern feel than a shiny top. The trade-off is that honed dark granite shows fingerprints and water more readily, which regular sealing and routine wiping manage easily.

Granite is a natural stone, so no two slabs are alike, and the veining in a stone like Black Fantasy gives a vanity real depth. It handles heat and scratches well and lasts for decades. Quartz is more stain-resistant out of the box and needs no sealing, so the decision usually comes down to whether you want the one-of-a-kind character of natural stone or the lower-maintenance consistency of engineered quartz.

What our Customers are Saying

"I absolutely love my new countertops. Very well crafted. I was so very impressed by the level of service I received from sales to scheduling to installation! Hard to find such great service these days. Kudos to the staff!"

"We had a great experience with Granite Mountain. We went to another showroom and were honestly really underwhelmed by the service and overwhelmed by the options. I loved that at granite mountain things were straightforward, all I had to pick from was granite (instead of furnishing a whole house). Easy to purchase, ask questions, and helpful installation staff. Thanks!"
